'Morning, Glory!
Cultivating a coffee-and-camera habit.
July 31, 2023 :: Gardens / Pleasant Surprises
A coffee mug in one hand, a camera-phone in the other -- that's a good start to the day. I don't walk around our small garden every morning, but when I do, I find surprises. That could become habit forming.
'Grandpa Ott' morning glories find the tall stems of 'Inca Ice' alstroemerias are as supportive as their wooden trellis. If we catch them in time, we can coax them back to their intended place in the garden. But if we had, I'd have never found this pleasing composition. Sometimes procrastination is best.
MAKING THE PHOTOGRAPH
SUBJECT: Morning glory and alstroemerias -- Ipomoea nil 'Grandpa Ott' and Alstroemeria 'Inca Ice'.
LOCATION: Our backyard in northern Indiana.
CONDITIONS: Clear, calm, 65 degrees F.
EQUIPMENT: Samsung Galaxy S9 smart phone.
What a remarkable thing a camera phone is. If it wasn't for this technological wonder, I would have smiled, sipped my coffee and walked on from the perfect situation. And it would have haunted me the rest of the day.
Sometimes I'll come back with my camera and tripod for a situation like this, but not always. And if I had, I'd have missed this soft light on a simple subject. The light changed in the next few minutes as the sun peeked through the maple tree branches and spotlighted the flower. That kind of light was too bright and harsh for this gentle, romantic scene.
So I'm happy to have captured the pleasing moment while the light was right and my coffee was hot.
