The original AI
July 7, 2025 :: Gardens / Practical Matters
Long before Artificial Intelligence slipped its leash and sprinted into the Art World, artists used the original AI – Artistic Intelligence.
The first artists to paint on cave walls or chip away bits of sandstone knew more about art than a computer program ever will. They interpreted the important elements of their world or their dreams in simple, elegant forms we admire millennia later.

Painters today choose what to add or omit in their compositions just as the revered masters did. With each brush stroke, they create the artistic reality that they envision.
Photographers have always been challenged to simplify their compositions. Eliminating unwanted elements required an educated combination of artistic and mechanical choices. Adding ingredients was surreal.
Not so anymore. The new computerized AI reality may now be defined as “Artist’s Intention: not just what I saw, but what I wanted to see.”
There’s no going back, so is it “full speed ahead” or “all good things in moderation?”
