The Lawn is overrated.

Especially the front lawn. It requires expensive equipment and intense, weekly efforts to maintain it. And to what end?
Wouldn’t the time and energy be better spent on plants more pleasing than turfgrass? Why not colorful garden beds, common or curious shrubbery, and well-chosen, well-placed shade trees instead?
Open grassy spaces are more practical for the backyard. A good landscape design can make the lawn there a perfect place for relaxing, dining, entertaining and playing. Add a patio or deck, a grill, and play equipment and the lawn in the backyard becomes another beloved living space.
Instead of an expanse of grass, a bed of purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) fills a sunny portion of this front yard. It’s flanked by a dwarf spruce (Picea sp.) and a dramatic Contorted Filbert ‘Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick’ (Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’).
GARDEN WALK photographs were made for the South Bend Art Museum Art League during their annual "Arts in Bloom" Garden Walks. The images were used for social media, promotions and education.
