A brave combination.

Combining plants of contrasting colors and textures is the sign of a brave gardener. Or a carefree one.

The dark-maroon filigree foliage of the Laceleaf Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) cascades down to the silvery leaves of well-chosen perennials including a fern, a heuchera and the fine-leaf Maui wormwood (Artemisia mauiensis ‘Makana Silver’).

The contrasts of leaf textures and colors are captivating. One of these plants on its own is stunning. Together they make us stop and stare.

Choosing the right place for them in the garden is as important as the decision to group them. They could be a prominent point of introduction or an invitation to a quiet corner.

The freedom to choose which plants go where is one of the joys of creating a green space.

GARDEN WALK photographs were made for the South Bend Art Museum Art League during their annual “Arts in Bloom” Garden Walks. The images were used for social media, promotions and education.
